Far Cry 5 Review : Should You Buy It?
When this game got its first trailer, there was a lot of shock value. Some good, but most of it was bad. Looking back at the Far Cry 5 trailer and now playing it, I must say the game used a genius approach in that trailer. Never saying what this game was, using only some images that would make the world wonder about their meaning. I have put about twenty-five hours into this game and it took me about eighteen hours to finish the story. Going into this game I just expected the average Far Cry game with nothing new, but I got way more than I expected. The way the game kicks off in the first hour really sets the tone for the rest of the game. It was eerie, dark, and goofy, with a form of realism that I really enjoyed. In this review, I will break down every major part of the game and let you decide on what Far Cry 5 accomplished.
Story : (Spoilers ahead)
The game is set in the fictional Hope County, Montana, where a preacher named Joseph Seed has risen to prominence. Seed believes that he has been chosen by God to protect the people of Hope County from an "inevitable collapse" and has established a congregation called the Project at Eden's Gate. Ostensibly, this is to fulfill his mission of leading the people to salvation; in reality, Seed is a radical preacher and Eden's Gate is a militaristic doomsday cult. Under his rule, Eden's Gate has used both coercion and violence to forcibly convert the residents of Hope County, and intimidation to keep them from contacting the outside world for help. Seed has assumed the title of "the Father" and maintains control over Hope County with the aid of his siblings, known as the Heralds: Jacob, "the Soldier" a former military officer who oversees the training and deployment of the cult's armed soldiers, John, "the Baptist" , a lawyer who has been able to acquire much of the land in Hope County for Eden's Gate and leads the forcible conversion of residents, and Faith, "the Siren" who acts as a pacifist to bring the people to trust in her older brother, but runs forced labor camps for residents who resist the cult.
The player takes on the role of a rookie sheriff's deputy—referred to as "the Deputy"—who is part of a task force sent to arrest Seed. The residents of Hope County opposed to Seed include a cast of characters who join the fight with motives ranging from altruism to revenge, profit and boredom. Was this story done right? Yes, Far Cry did a great mix of realism but added some off the wall stuff to not get bad mouthed by the media even more. In order to take down Joesph Seed and get your friends back, You must take out John, Jacob, & Faith, who all have one of your friends captured in their bunkers. The whole system has worked well, as you aren't forced into anything and can play at your own pace. Far Cry also added many Easter eggs in the game that are known in pop culture, a few of which are poking fun of Past Far Cry games and the watchtower missions. For example, there’s “It” From the book By Stephen King and Bigfoot even got a reference. The Microtransactions are there for weapons but the weapons are so meaningless that it really doesn't bother you. In this game you have three endings.
The Easter Egg Far Cry ending, just like in Far Cry 4, Far Cry 5 continues the game’s history by giving you the chance to beat the game in the opening cut scene. In the scene where you go to arrest the Father, just refuse to handcuff him and you will proceed to just leave and the credits will roll.
The Real Endings: When you finally confront Joseph Seed after about fifteen plus hours of gameplay, he uses his bliss to control the minds of the people you have trusted and worked with. He has captured the friends you just set free. He does a great monologue and gives you the choice to just leave and let his people be. Now if you choose to turn around and walk away, You and your friends get in a truck and appear to go get the national guard. However, the music plays a familiar song that has been trained in your mind through the torture of Jacob Seed that causes you to blackout and kill. The screen gets red and the credit ends, which I think means that you have just killed the sheriff, Hudson, and Pratt. Now if you do choose to take down the Father, well then, you have some guts because you are in one of the coolest boss fights in gaming history. You have to fight all of those friends. Shooting them knocks them down and if you can revive them, they go back to normal. If Joseph revives them though, they will try to kill you. If you get past that and get to the cut scene, do not put the controller down, as you will see the nuke explode and you have to race to get to Dutch's bunker. You then crash, which leads to the craziest bad ending I can remember since Mass Effect 3. Everyone is dead except you and Joseph Seed and he implies that you’ll both will repair the world.
Conclusion:
Should you buy it? Is it worth the full price? Yes, you will get fifteen plus hours just in the story and another ten hours with all the other things, days and days of gameplay playing Far Cry Arcade and even working in that fun editor. Ubisoft is on a roll as of late with Assassin Creed Origins being one of the best games in the franchise and now Far Cry 5 being the best Far Cry in my mind. Far Cry 5 is an early game this year and it will be a game that I will keep coming back to all year long.
